Unilever has recalled several popular brands of aerosol dry shampoo including Dove. This action has been taken in the US market. A dangerous chemical named benzene has been found in many shampoo brands of the company, which is at risk of causing cancer. The company has sourced several dry shampoos from the US market including Dove, Nexxus, Suave, Tigi and Tresemme Aerosol. According to a notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s website, the recall includes brands such as Nexus, Suave, Tresemme and Tiggy, which make Rockaholic and Bed Head dry shampoo.
Recall products before 2021
According to a Bloomberg report, Unilever has recalled all products manufactured before October 2021. This news has once again raised questions on the safety of personal care products. In the past year and a half, there have been reports of several aerosol sunscreens such as Johnson & Johnson’s Neutrogena, Edgewell Personal Care Company’s Banana Boat. According to the report, P&G had recalled its Pantene and Herbal Essence dry shampoo in December last year citing a mixture of benzene.
According to the Collins dictionary, dry shampoo is the same as powder or spray. Such products are usually used to clean the hair without wetting it. This is not the first time that spray-on dry shampoo has been questioned. The company has not released the amount of benzene found in the products. But Unilever has said that it has carefully recalled all products.
The Food and Drug Administration has said that daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products is likely to cause adverse health consequences. Bloomberg quoted the agency as saying that exposure to benzene can cause leukemia and other blood cancers.
Last year, Procter & Gamble recalled 30 more aerosol spray haircare products. These included dry shampoo and conditioner. The company had warned of the presence of benzene in these products.
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Maharashtra government canceled the license to manufacture Johnson Baby Powder. The powder samples did not meet the standard quality. Samples of Johnson Baby Powder were taken from Mulund, Mumbai, Pune and Nashik.
