Amid the upsurge in cases of Coronavirus, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced a week-long curfew. Week-long curfew will start tonight in the national capital.
The decision was taken at a meeting held between Lt Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
“I always say all of Delhi is like a family. Even now we will face it together. We have won earlier, we will win again,” Kejriwal said in a press conference. Addressing a virtual press conference, Delhi CM Kejriwal flagged the shortage of beds in hospitals and the depleting oxygen reserves in the national capital.
Essential services will continue:
Essential services, food services, medical services will continue. Weddings can be held with a gathering of only 50 people, passes will be issued separately for it. A detailed order will be issued shortly, says Delhi CM.
All private offices will have to work from home during the lockdown period in Delhi.
Services such as police, prison, home guard, civil defence, fire and emergency services, district administration, pay & account office, services, electricity, water and sanitation, public transport (air/railways/Delhi Metro/buses) will also be operational.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court orders that all the judicial officers of the District Courts in Delhi shall take up only urgent cases of their respective Courts, through video conferencing mode.
Rising cases put unprecedented stress on heath infrastructure:
Kejriwal also said, “Over the past few days Delhi has witnessed over 25,000 daily cases. Delhi recorded around 23,500 Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours. Such massive number of cases will crumble any functional health system in the world. Delhi’s health infrastructure is under tremendous pressure at the moment.”
The rising cases have put unprecedented stress on the existing health infrastructure and the availability of oxygen.
Kejriwal urged the migrant workers to not leave the city as this is a small lockdown. This is a small lockdown. Please stay in Delhi. I am hopeful that there will be no need to extend this lockdown, he said.
Delhi recorded the biggest jump in its daily Covid tally with 25,462 fresh cases and a positivity rate of nearly 30 per cent, on Sunday. On Saturday, this figure was around 24 per cent.
