Chaos unfolded at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi as clashes erupted between student factions during the selection process of the election committee, leaving several students injured and sparking renewed concerns over campus tensions.

Dispute Over Election Committee Selection Leads to Violence

The altercation, reportedly triggered by disagreements over the selection of election committee members at the School of Languages, quickly escalated into violence between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed groups.

Videos Circulate on Social Media

Videos circulating on social media platforms depicted the chaos, with one showing a man wielding a stick and another hurling a bicycle at students. Additional footage portrayed individuals being mobbed and beaten by a group, despite efforts by university security personnel to intervene.

Injuries and Allegations

According to university officials, some students were admitted to Safdarjung Hospital following the clash. Both sides have filed police complaints against each other, with the All India Students’ Association (AISA) accusing ABVP members of resorting to physical violence and targeting Muslim students. In contrast, ABVP JNU President Umesh Chandra Ajmeera alleged that Left-leaning students were attempting to rig the election process.

Renewed Concerns Over Campus Tensions

The incident has reignited concerns over the escalating tensions between different student factions within JNU, known for its politically charged atmosphere and active student body involvement in socio-political issues.

Investigation Ongoing

The Delhi Police have confirmed receiving complaints from both sides and are examining the matter. However, the exact number of injured students and the university administration’s response remain undisclosed at this time.
