Delhi News: The education minister of Delhi, Atishi, announced on Sunday that schools in the national capital would remain closed for the next five days for students from nursery to Class 5 due to prevailing cold weather conditions. This decision comes after the Delhi government initially extended the winter vacation but later retracted the order, citing an error.
Confusion over Winter Vacation Extension
Earlier on Saturday, the directorate had declared an extension of the winter vacation in all government and private schools in Delhi until January 10 due to cold weather conditions. However, this decision was quickly withdrawn, with officials stating that there was an error in the order. The directorate mentioned that further orders regarding the winter break would be issued in due course.
Weather Conditions in Delhi
Delhi experienced another day of grey, foggy conditions on Saturday, with daytime temperatures reaching only 15.2 degrees Celsius and lows settling at 8.9 degrees. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a rise in temperatures over the next two days, with a western disturbance expected to bring light rain on Tuesday. Cold day conditions are anticipated to abate by Sunday.
Holiday Extension for Noida and Greater Noida Schools
In a separate move, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration ordered all schools in Noida and Greater Noida to observe holidays for students up to Class 8 until January 14 due to dense fog and cold weather conditions. The order, issued by District Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar, applies to all schools recognized by state boards, CBSE, ICSE, IB, and others.
Cold Wave Warning in Western Uttar Pradesh
Parts of western Uttar Pradesh, including Gautam Buddh Nagar, have witnessed single-digit minimum temperatures. The IMD has issued a cold wave and fog warning for western Uttar Pradesh, with temperatures expected to hover between 9 and 13 degrees Celsius over the next six days.
