RTE Seats: In the past two months, the education department has mapped 1,112 private schools located in cities. Beginning with the upcoming academic session, 1,700 more seats will be made available under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. This academic session, a total of 14,782 seats were available under the RTE Act. However, after students applied for these seats, there were only 5,500 allocations made. 3,205 of these admissions were finished.
Mapping for Enrollment Identification
Authorities stated that the mapping assisted in identifying schools with lower enrollment; as a result, the total number of seats has been raised to 16,521. In the meantime, the names of 161 out of 1,112 schools have been removed from the list because they did not meet the requirements for RTE admissions. “Several private schools showed fewer seats than they have. The mapping identified such schools, with the number of seats increased now,” said education department official.
Parental Challenges Post Seat Assignments
All private schools are required by the RTE Act to set aside 25% of their seats for students who fall into the economically disadvantaged section (EWS) category. Parents said that after receiving their seat assignments from the BSA office, some schools refused to admit their children, and others demanded payment to finish the admissions process. “The admission of 2,358 students is yet to be done. Due to issues in their documents, the admission remained stuck,” said an official.
