IIT Kanpur: In an effort to balance the gender gap in engineering, the Ministry of Education has made significant strides, and more IIT seats have been set aside for female students per their directives. In this approach, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has set aside 246 places for females. The female students in the engineering program have been very happy since hearing this news.
Introduction of Supernumerary Seats
Twenty percent of the supernumerary seats at IIT Kanpur have reportedly been set aside for female students, according to media sources. All courses have supernumerary seats available. In all, 246 seats have been set aside for supernumerary enrollment in the institute’s 14 courses. The field with the most seats—39—is electrical engineering, followed by mechanical and civil engineering with 30 each. The unique aspect of this is that girls will be able to enter even if the reserved seats are filled.
Distribution of Reserved Seats by Course
There are 55 general seats in Aerospace and 14 supernumerary seats, similarly there are 42 and 11 seats in BABE, 83 and 21 in Chemical, 118 and 30 in Civil, 103 and 26 in Computer Science, 153 and 39 in Electrical, 68 and 17 in Materials Science, 119 and 30 in Mechanical, 39 and 10 in Chemistry, 41 and 11 in Economics, 51 and 13 in Mathematics and Scientific Computing, 36 and 9 in Physics, 34 and 9 in Earth Science, 22 and 6 in Statistics and Data Science.
