Aligarh Muslim University: The Supreme Court today made a significant remark on the minority status issue of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stated that AMU’s minority status would remain for now. However, a three-judge bench will soon set new criteria for minority status. Future decisions regarding this will be based on these new standards. Following the Supreme Court’s comments on AMU’s minority status, the matter has become widely discussed, with users sharing reactions on various social media platforms.

Social Media Reactions on Aligarh Muslim University’s Minority Status

On social media, many users have shared their thoughts about AMU’s minority status. An X handle user named Dilip Mandal posted his views, stating, “AMU is a central university established by law and runs on central government funds. Many people haven’t read the Supreme Court’s decision yet. Today, the decision isn’t about AMU; only guidelines have been shared on what constitutes a minority institution. Today’s judgment states that a new bench will be formed regarding Aligarh Muslim University. Wait for that decision. Those who are celebrating right now are in a hurry.”

An X handle user, Prabhakar Kumar Mishra, wrote, “CJI Chandrachud threw a googly before leaving, and we are out. The 1967 Supreme Court Constitution Bench’s decision in the Aziz Basha case has been overturned. However, AMU’s status will be decided by a three-judge bench.”

Political Reactions on AMU’s Minority Status

Several political leaders have also responded to the Supreme Court’s remarks regarding AMU’s minority status. Hyderabad MP and AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi commented, “It is an important day for Muslims of India. The 1967 judgement had rejected minority status of #AMU when in fact it was. Article 30 states that minorities have the right to establish and administer their educational institutions in a manner that they deem fit. The right of minorities to educate themselves has been upheld. I congratulate all students and faculty of AMU today. It does not matter if the University was established before the Constitution, or if it was set up by a law of the govt. It is a minority institution if it was established by minorities. All the arguments of the BJP were rejected.”

Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi also shared his response on the Supreme Court’s remark, saying, “Long live Aligarh Muslim University. Congratulations to the honourable Supreme Court for its wonderful decision; minority status will remain intact. The government’s conspiracies failed.”

While talking to news agency ANI, Former BJP leader and Cabinet Minister Shahnawaz Hussain stated, “The Supreme Court in its judgement has said that the matter will go to a regular bench of the Supreme Court. Till then, AMU will have the minority status. There has been a lot of discussions regarding it. When you take help from the central government the rules which are followed everywhere should be followed there also.”

AMU’s Response to the Supreme Court’s Ruling

AMU PRO (Public Relations Officer) Omar Salim Peerzada said, “AMU honours the decision of the SC… For now, we are dedicated to maintaining academic actions, nation-building, and inclusivity.”

In response to the Supreme Court’s decision on AMU’s minority status, the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Naeema Khatoon, said, “We honour the judgement. We will discuss with our legal experts for the next course of action.”

Professor Aftab Ahmed from Aligarh Muslim University commented, “SC majority judgement has not said anything about the minority status. So it will remain as a minority institution. We will read the judgement and decide the next course of action.”
