Karnataka News: Before entering the exam room, female students taking the Karnataka Public Service Commission examination were instructed to take off their “mangalsutra.” In addition to the mangalsutra, a necklace that married Hindu women wear around their necks, female students were also ordered to take off any jewellery, such as toe rings, chains, and earrings.
BJP’s Basangouda Yatnal Questions Religious Bias
In response to the event, MLA Basangouda Yatnal of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) questioned whether the action was “only for Hindus.” Furthermore, according to a girl who was requested to take off her mangalsutra, ladies who wore hijabs were also inspected by the authorities but were still permitted entry.
Hindu Student’s View on ‘Mangalsutra’ Removal
“In Hindu culture, there’s no requirement to remove the mangalsutra. We’ll remove them when we have to. I removed my mangalsutra and toe ring and went in. Just like how they checked for hijab and allowed them, they should have also checked us and allowed us inside,” the student said. This happened a few days after a few students were discovered to have cheated on the KEA exam, which selects applicants for positions in numerous boards and companies. In the test room, the pupils were observed utilising Bluetooth devices.
