Lallan Kumar, an assistant professor at Nitisheswar College in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, has returned nearly Rs 24 lakh of his total earnings because he hasn’t had a single student to show up for a class in 33 months, because his “conscience did not allow” him to keep the money without working.
Since no one had shown up for his classes, the professor gave up his roughly Rs 24 lakh salary as a show of displeasure. On Wednesday, Kumar told the media, “My conscience does not permit me to receive a salary without teaching.”
Who is Lallan Kumar, the professor?
At the BR Ambedkar Bihar University-affiliated Nitishwar College in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Lallan Kumar teaches Hindi as an assistant professor.
After earning his PhD and MPhil from Delhi University, Kumar earned his Hindi Master’s degree at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
He had applied for a position at the postgraduate department, according a Mint story, in order to become “more active” in academia.
He asserts that since enrolling, he has never encountered an educational environment in the college. He claimed, “I heard my inner voice and chose to return my pay to the institution for two years and nine months.”

Nitisheshwar College, established in 1970 by the liberation warrior Nitisheshwar Prasad Singh, has been a member of BRABU since 1976. It provides undergraduate courses in both science and the arts. Nearly 3,000 people attend Nitisheshwar College. The school employs 31 permanent and guest instructors in total.
College Principal said Kumar’s assertion of 0% attendance was unfounded
There are over 3,000 students at Nitishwar College. Out of them, 1,110 undergraduates are required to take Hindi as part of their coursework. Aside from a guest professor for the subject, Lallan Kumar is the college’s only other regular instructor of Hindi.
The college’s principal, Manoj Kumar, asserted that Kumar’s assertion of 0% attendance was unfounded. “The coronavirus pandemic caused two years of missed courses. If Lallan Kumar wanted a transfer, he ought to have told me right away, he claimed.
Lallan Kumar’s decision to repay his 33-month salary was further discussed by Manoj Kumar. He stated, “The college has been offering online classes since the coronavirus pandemic rocked the world a few months after Lallan Kumar enrolled at the college.”
The vice chancellor is examining the issue with the university’s registrar, and the principal of Nitishwar College will shortly be contacted to provide an explanation for absenteeism.
