National Education Day 2024: Today, on November 11, India observes National Education Day, honoring Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the country’s first Education Minister. This day signifies the important role of education in shaping India’s future. With a large youthful population, India relies on education to build a stronger and more progressive nation. On this day, we reflect on advancements made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, from establishing new IITs and IIMs to implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, marked a major shift in India’s education landscape. Approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29, 2020, this policy equips students with skills for the 21st century. Aiming to make learning more inclusive and adaptable, the NEP addresses India’s evolving educational needs. By focusing on holistic development, flexibility, and quality, it aims to foster an environment where every student can succeed.
New IITs Established Under Modi Government
To expand access to premier engineering education, the Modi government established several new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across India:
- IIT Dharwad: Since opening in 2016, this IIT has expanded from B.Tech programs in Electrical, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering to include Engineering Physics and Chemical Engineering.
- IIT Bhilai: Opened in 2016, it offers a wide range of programs, including B.Tech, M.Tech, MSc, and PhD. In the NIRF 2023 rankings, it secured the 81st position among engineering colleges in India.
- IIT Goa: This IIT has operated from a temporary campus since 2016, offering courses in Computer Science, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering.
- IIT Palakkad: Established in 2015, IIT Palakkad provides B.Tech, M.Tech, MSc, and PhD programs in various engineering and science fields.
- IIT Tirupati: Since 2015, it has grown to offer programs in engineering, science, and public policy.
- IIT Jammu: Launched in 2016, initially under IIT Delhi’s mentorship, IIT Jammu now operates on its own campus.
These new IITs aim to increase accessibility to top-notch engineering education and bring advanced technical training closer to more communities.
New IIMs Established Under Modi Government
Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are known for excellence in management education. Under the Modi administration, several new IIM campuses were added:
- IIM Visakhapatnam: Established in 2015, it offers popular programs like the PGP and ranked 29th among Indian management institutes by NIRF 2023.
- IIM Bodh Gaya: Launched in 2015, this IIM has consistently achieved excellent placement records and offers a variety of programs, including PGP and PhD.
- IIM Sirmaur: This IIM, established in 2015, boasts a 100% placement record and ranks 98th among management institutes.
- IIM Nagpur: Started under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad, this institute was ranked 43rd by NIRF 2023 and offers MBA and doctoral programs.
- IIM Jammu: Since its establishment in 2015, IIM Jammu has ranked 41st in NIRF’s management category, offering programs in various management disciplines.
These new IIMs broaden the scope of management education, nurturing future business leaders from various regions.
New AIIMS Established Under Modi Government
Recognising the need for accessible healthcare education, the Modi government has established multiple All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) across India. Under PM Modi’s administration, 22 new AIIMS were sanctioned, with 18 now operational. These institutions play a crucial role in training healthcare professionals, reducing the shortage of medical experts, and improving healthcare access nationwide.

National Education Day 2024 is a time to celebrate India’s strides in education under PM Modi’s leadership.
