NCERT: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched the latest edition of its Class 6 Social Science textbook titled ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond,’ featuring significant revisions in its coverage of the Harappan civilisation. Renowned as the ‘Sindhu-Sarasvati Civilisation,’ the textbook details its inhabitants, the Harappans, as part of one of the world’s oldest civilisations.

Unit 6 of the textbook, ‘The Beginnings of Indian Civilisation,’ explores the various names archaeologists have attributed to the civilisation, including ‘Indus,’ ‘Harappan,’ ‘Indus-Sarasvati,’ or ‘Sindhu-Sarasvati.’ The chapter underscores the cultural and historical significance of the Sarasvati River, known today as the ‘Ghaggar’ in India and ‘Hakra’ in Pakistan. It also references its mention in ancient texts such as the Rig Veda.

NCERT’s initiative to update the curriculum aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aimed at integrating contemporary insights and ensuring relevance in educational materials. Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani reaffirmed that the revisions were driven by subject and pedagogy experts, emphasizing the absence of external influence in the process.

The revised textbook aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of early Indian civilisations, reflecting NCERT’s commitment to delivering updated and informative educational resources.
