In a noteworthy development pertaining to the NEET examination, former HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has insisted on a comprehensive probe conducted by officials designated by the Supreme Court. Allegations of extensive irregularities and corruption across multiple states are at the centre of the dispute, not the exam itself.
Demand for Supreme Court Inquiry
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has called for an inquiry into the purported anomalies surrounding the NEET exam by authorities designated by the Supreme Court. He highlighted the importance of accountability and openness in the administration of these important tests, citing reports of malpractices and paper leaks from Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
Government’s Role and Allegations
Sibal accused the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts NEET, of mishandling and engaging in corruption. While talking to news agency PTI, He emphasised concerns about question papers that had been leaked and solutions that had been made available, casting doubt on the validity of the testing procedure.
History of NEET and Legal Battles
The Medical Council of India (MCI) first proposed the NEET regulation in 2010, but it was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2013 as a result of legal challenges. The National Medical Council Act and modifications to the Indian Medical Council Act were among the later events that established the current structure that the Supreme Court upheld in 2020.
Political Backlash and Government’s Response
Sibal criticised the way the current government is handling the matter, saying that they are centralising decisions without sufficiently involving the states. Citing occurrences in Gujarat as evidence, he expressed dismay over Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s rejection of charges of corruption.
Call for Parliamentary Action
Sibal urged all political parties to give the NEET topic top priority for discussion in Parliament in the next session. He emphasised the significance of resolving the issue since it had a significant influence on prospective medical students across the country, though he predicting resistance from the government on the grounds of sub-judice.
