Unacademy: Social media users have dug up an old video of another educator who termed tribal people “stupid” during one of his lectures. This comes as edtech company Unacademy faces criticism for firing an educator who advised voters to support “educated candidates.” A social media user posted a 14-second video and claimed that the teacher is still associated with Unacademy despite making nasty and disparaging remarks.
Unacademy’s Siddharth Singh Labels Tribals ‘Ignorant’
Siddharth Singh, a teacher, was heard saying in the video: “Tribal log jo hote hain hamare, dimaag toh hota nahi unke paas koi, nahi unke paas koi, you know, kanooni koi kagaaz hote hai zameen zaydad ke (Tribal people are ignorant. They also lack land and property-related legal documentation. When the video first appeared in September 2021, it sparked anger, and Unacademy later removed it from its page. A statement from the edtech company also apologised for the statements and the “hurt the comment has caused.” “It has been brought to our notice that in a recent video created by one of our Educators Mr. Siddharth Singh, he has made discriminatory and hurtful comments against people from indigenous tribes,” the statement read.
Deletes Video, Penalizes Educator Over Controversial Remark
“Unacademy has deleted the original video and has penalised the Educator, in compliance with our internal Code of Conduct guidelines. Unacademy unconditionally regrets the comments made by the Educator and the hurt the comment has caused,” it added. Since one educator, Karan Sangwan, urged students to support educated candidates while criticising the new measures that aim to replace the colonial-era IPC, CrPC, and Indian Evidence Act, Unacademy has been in the spotlight of controversy. Unacademy fired Karan Sangwan on the grounds that students should not express their personal beliefs in the classroom. Sangwan was in breach of contract, according to Unacademy co-founder Roman Saini, thus the business had to fire him.
Fired Educator Karan Sangwan Stands Firm on Education’s Significance
However, Sangwan insisted that he stands by his statements since he believes that education is crucial to everyone’s success. “I was made fun of. I am the subject of the Educator Labels Tribals ‘Stupid,’ Unacademy Under Scrutinyf debate. Unacademy has been challenged…Maybe there was pressure on them, and that’s why they fired me,” he said to India Today. Sangwan added that he made the claim on his YouTube channel, Legal Pathshala, now known as Karan Sangwan, rather than in an Unacademy class.
