In a major decision, the Supreme Court ordered the National Testing Agency (NTA) to make the NEET-UG 2024 results available by 12 pm on Saturday, for both city-wise and centre-wise. Most importantly, the applicants’ identities have to be kept confidential.
Court’s Decision on NEET-UG Results
DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra chaired a panel that examined many petitions alleging anomalies in the NEET-UG examination. Senior advocate Narendra Hooda emphasised the need of transparency by revealing each student’s scores while defending the petitioners. On the other side, the Solicitor General stated that since the findings include students’ private information, they shouldn’t be made public.
Ensuring Fairness Without Revealing Identities
To address privacy concerns, Chief Justice Chandrachud recommended assigning dummy roll numbers in a center-by-center order. After examining the arguments on both sides, the court ordered the NTA to publish the marks of the students while keeping their names private.
“We acknowledge that there were leaks at Patna and Hazaribag centres. We need to determine if this issue was isolated or widespread. Students are disadvantaged as they don’t know their results. We want to see the mark pattern across centres while keeping student identities masked,” CJI Chandrachud remarked.
Continued Examination of Alleged Irregularities
With the goal of ensuring a fair resolution for all affected students, the Supreme Court will resume its examination into the alleged NEET-UG irregularities on Monday.
