UGC releases draft guidelines for environment education at UG level

For undergraduate environmental education courses, the guidelines and curriculum framework have been made public. During a World Environment Day event, Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Minister of State for Education, unveiled them.

Dr. Singh interacted with leaders, instructors, and students from higher education institutions (HEIs) around the country at the event. The University Grants Commission (UGC) gave all undergraduate programmes in HEIs explicit instructions to include this course.

Because environmental education is interdisciplinary, HEIs have the option to use the team-teaching method. Higher education institutions can use the SWAYAM platform to access online resources like videos and e-content to support the teaching-learning process.

Dr. Singh emphasised during the ceremony that the country-wide celebration of World Environment Day aims to engage youngsters in spreading the message of Lifestyle for Environment (LIFE) and increase awareness among school-age children and others.

He emphasised that the rules are made to accommodate students from varied disciplinary backgrounds and raise knowledge of our country’s commitment to achieving sustainable development goals and dealing with international environmental challenges.

According to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises the value of incorporating environmental education into educational programmes, the curriculum and rules are based on the learning outcomes. Additionally, the training promotes sensitivity to environmental issues, including conservation and sustainable development.

Climate change, sanitation, biological diversity conservation, pollution control, waste management, management of biological resources and biodiversity, preservation of forests and wildlife, and sustainable development are only a few of the subjects covered by the standards.

The Commission acknowledges that environmental issues are becoming more urgent in today’s society and that this calls for quick attention and coordinated action.

The UGC has adopted these guidelines to incorporate environmental education and sustainable practises into higher education curricula nationally, acknowledging the critical role that universities play in forming the minds of future leaders and professionals. The UGC said in a notification, “Let us empower the next generation to become responsible custodians of our environment together.”
