70th National Film Awards: The best Indian films made in a variety of languages in 2022 were recognised with the announcement of the 70th National Film Awards at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. The President of India will present these esteemed awards at the ceremony, which is scheduled at a later time. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has certified both feature and non-feature films between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.
Malayalam Drama ‘Aattam’ Wins Best Feature Film
The Malayalam film Aattam emerged victorious in the Best Feature Film category, demonstrating the robustness and variety of regional cinema in India. Meanwhile, Nithya Menen for Tiruchitrabalam and Manasi Parekh for Kutch Express shared the Best Actress title, while Rishab Shetty won Best Actor for his outstanding performance in Kantara. The night’s biggest winner was the Tamil epic Ponniyin Selvan: 1, which took home four awards in different categories.
Key Highlights from the 70th National Film Awards
- Best Actor: Rishab Shetty, who starred in Kantara, was recognised for his powerful performance in the movie and was awarded Best Actor.
- Best Actress: This year’s winners of the Best Actress award were Manasi Parekh for her work in Kutch Express and Nithya Menen for her role in Tiruchitrabalam.
- Best Director: Renowned director Sooraj Barjatya won for his work on the critically acclaimed movie Uunchai.
- Special Mention: In recognition of his steady excellence in the Indian film business, Manoj Bajpayee was given a Special Mention for his performance in Gulmohar.
- Best Feature Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment: Kantara got the title of Best Feature Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment in addition to earning Rishab Shetty the Best Actor award.

The National Film Awards also celebrated the best regional films across various languages:
- Best Telugu Film – Karthikeya 2
- Best Tamil Film – Ponniyin Selvan – Part 1
- Best Punjabi Film – Baaghi Di Dhee
- Best Odia Film – Daman
- Best Malayalam Film – Saudi Velakka CC.225/2009
- Best Marathi Film – Vaalvi
- Best Kannada Film – KGF: Chapter 2
- Best Hindi Film – Gulmohar

In addition to performance-based awards, the 70th National Film Awards also recognized outstanding achievements in technical categories:
- Best Cinematography – Ponniyin Selvan – Part 1

Non-Feature Film and Film Writing Awards
The awards honoured contributions to cinema writing as well as non-feature films in addition to feature films. Best Non-Feature Film went to Ayena, Best Critic went to Deepak Dua, and Best Book on Cinema went to Kishore Kumar: The Ultimate Biography.
The National Film Awards preserve the tradition of excellence in Indian cinema by honouring the rich and varied regional languages in addition to the mainstream.
