Adipurush: Cinemas in Kathmandu, Nepal have pulled down the curtain on morning showings of the much-anticipated film “Adipurush”, following objections over a contentious dialogue involving the character Janaki, modelled on Sita. The line, referring to Janaki as ‘the daughter of India’, has triggered demands for the removal of this phrase from the film by Mayor Balendra Shah and local residents.

Kathmandu’s Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah has issued a sweeping prohibition on the screening of Hindi films in the capital of Nepal until the problematic dialogue is expunged from “Adipurush”. This restriction, announced via a Facebook post, extends to not only Nepal, but also India, adding a layer of complexity to the issue.

After the Nepal Censor Board issued a directive to the makers of “Adipurush”, production companies UV Creations and Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series have conceded to the removal of the controversial line. Consequently, the epic retelling of the Ramayana, directed by Om Raut, is now slated for release in Nepal, simultaneously with India. Nevertheless, concerns over potential security implications have led to the cancellation of the morning shows.
