Black Mirror, Netflix’s acclaimed anthology series, has returned for a sixth season, bringing with it a marked shift from its characteristic dystopian sci-fi narrative. However, not all experiments yield the desired results, and season six of Black Mirror might leave the fanbase feeling a tad underwhelmed. Here’s an in-depth review of the fresh season.
A Departure From The Usual: Mixed Results
Charlie Brooker, the creative genius behind Black Mirror, took an ambitious leap in the sixth season, veering away from suspenseful science-fiction and introducing elements of horror and bleak drama. The quintessential Black Mirror style is seen only in one of the five episodes, the premiere, Joan is Awful. This instalment revisits the familiar territory of exploring the dangers of new technology, in this case, the entertainment industry’s exploitation of private stories, replete with an AI angle.

A Trip Down The Memory Lane: The Past Revisited
Three of the five episodes from the season take the audience on a nostalgic journey into the past, offering a variety in the usually future-oriented anthology series. Brooker’s critical view of the true crime genre continues in Loch Henry, with a plot circling a couple investigating a serial killer in a Scottish town. However, the slow burn leading to an expected twist might not sit well with fans expecting more.
A Glance at The Highlights: Some Bright Spots
Amid the mix of episodes, a couple of standouts have managed to rise above. Joan is Awful, with its blend of satire and critique on entertainment industry exploitation, stands out. Notably, the lone episode not entirely penned by Brooker, Demon 79, co-written with Ms. Marvel head writer Bisha K. Ali, provides a welcomed change of pace, offering a blend of dark humour and emotional surprises.
Final Thoughts: Hits and Misses
The sixth season of Black Mirror delivers some hits but misses the mark on many accounts. While Joan is Awful and Demon 79 successfully experiment with the traditional Black Mirror mould, the other episodes seem to lack narrative depth or fail to deliver on their promising premises. Fans may choose to view these two episodes as standalone short films, while considering skipping the rest. Season 6 is a bold attempt, albeit not as gripping as its predecessors. Nevertheless, it is worth a watch for the die-hard fans of the Black Mirror universe.
