BLACKPINK: After months of speculation, it’s official now. BLACKPINK made history as they became the first K-pop group to headline Coachella! On January 10, the famous U.S. music festival officially revealed its star-studded lineup for 2023, which will feature BLACKPINK, Bad Bunny, and Frank Ocean as headliners. The Korean group comprises Jennie, Rosé, Lisa and Jisoo.
Some of the biggest names in desi music have made it to California. Coachella announced its line-up for the 2023 festival and it is the first time in history that the headliners aren’t white musicians. Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny, K-pop sensations BLACKPINK, musician Frank Ocean, Indian sensation Diljit Dosanjh and Pakistani artiste Ali Sethi are all set to perform at Coachella.
Though BLACKPINK had performed at Coachella back in 2019, this will be the first time they are taking the stage as a headliner. This makes them the first K-pop artist ever to headline the festival.
First-ever K-pop group
With this development, the quartet is now the first-ever K-pop group and the sixth female act to headline the festival. Legendary names such as Björk, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish have performed at the music festival.
In 2019, BLACKPINK drew attention by being a sub-headliners at Coachella along with Janelle Monae, the 1975, and Diplo. Coachella is the largest music festival in the United States where about 200 artists and groups perform for two weekends. The music festival will take place from April 14-23 in California.
Last year about 250,000 fans attended the cultural festival that exchanges not only music, but also fashion and lifestyle trends. It is called one of the hottest festivals in the world.
Paul Tollett visited Korea last year
The creator of Coachella, Paul Tollett, visited Korea last year before announcing his line up and personally invited BLACKPINK.
BLACKPINK recently appeared in a documentary Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert.
BLACKPINK recently went on their Asia tour beginning with Bangkok. They will also travel to Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates throughout January.
Coachella is known as the ‘dream stage’ for budding musicians.
