India Maldives Row: The digital battle between India and the Maldives has acquired a new twist. Following in the footsteps of athletes and politicians, Bollywood artists have begun to boycott the Maldives. Amidst mounting tensions between India and Maldives, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) declared their intention to demand a boycott of filming in the Maldives. The film industry workers’ union condemned recent comments made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Maldivian ministers and urged others to join them in opposing the ban. They asked filmmakers to choose “similar locations in India” in a statement.
FWICE releases statement to encourage filmmakers
FWICE released a statement regarding this and it read, “In view of the growing row between India and Maldives over the derogatory statement issued by three ministers of Maldives, the FWICE which is the oldest and largest Federal body of the workers, technicians and artists working in the media and entertainment industry, strongly condemns the most irresponsible and ridiculous remarks of the ministers of Maldives passed on globally respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji. In solidarity with the nation and its wide culture, the members of the FWICE have decided to boycott Maldives for their shooting locations. Instead, the FWICE appeals its members to choose similar locations in India for their shooting purpose and contribute towards developing the tourism in India.”
It summed up with, “All the producers in India and over the globe are hereby advised not to plan any shootings or production activities in Maldives. We all stand in strong support towards our Prime Minister and our Nation.”
Why Boycott Maldives is trending?
Days after a few well-known Maldivians made fun of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to tour Indian islands, the decision was made. To promote the Lakshadweep Islands, Prime Minister Modi recently visited the area and shared photos of himself relaxing on the beach and even tried snorkelling.
