Bruce Lee: The legendary martial artist and actor Bruce Lee may have died from drinking too much water, claims a new study. After almost 50 years of Lee’s demise, who passed away at 32 in the summer of 1973 in Hong Kong, doctors have said this on the basis of new study.
An autopsy report from the time showed that the star had been killed by brain swelling, which medics said was due to taking a painkiller. Researchers have now reviewed the evidence and concluded that Bruce is more likely to have died from hyponatremia.
What does the new study say?
In a journal named ‘Clinical Kidney’, experts have signified that, “In other words, we propose that the kidney’s inability to excrete excess water killed Bruce Lee. We hypothesize that Bruce Lee died from a specific form of kidney dysfunction: the inability to excrete enough water to maintain water homeostasis, which is mainly a tubular function.”
“This may lead to hyponatremia, cerebral edema (brain swelling) and death within hours if excess water intake is not matched by water excretion in urine, which is in line with the timeline of Lee’s demise… ironically, Lee made famous the quote, ‘Be water, my friend,’ but excess water appears to have ultimately killed him.”
Bruce Lee’s death has remained a mystery
According to the study, Bruce had a number of risk factors for hyponatremia, including using cannabis, which makes people thirstier, and consuming large amounts of liquid. Hyponatremia is characterised by abnormally low blood sodium levels, which people require for liquid balance.
The imbalance makes all of the body’s cells enlarge, including brain cells. Bruce’s death has been the subject of conspiracy theories for many years. Some of these theories suggest that he was killed by Chinese gangsters, poisoned by a jealous lover, or the victim of a curse.
What was the diet of Bruce Lee?
His 77-year-old wife Linda Lee claimed that the kung-fu master’s diet prior to his passing consisted primarily of carrot and apple juice. Bruce Lee repeatedly drank water on the evening of his death, according to Matthew Polly, the author of the 2018 biography “Bruce Lee, A Life.” According to reports, Bruce used marijuana frequently and once wrote in a letter that he was “stoned as hell.”
Following a diagnosis of cerebral edoema and Bruce’s admission that he had eaten Nepalese hash just before the incident, he passed out in May 1973.
