In Bollywood‘s golden period the 1970s and 1980s saw the development of a magnificent actor, Ranjeet Bedi whose portrayal of wicked characters made an unforgettable impression on spectators. However his on-screen identities frequently led to misunderstandings about his true personality among his family and relations.
Ranjeet, born Gopal Singh Bedi rose to prominence for his negative part in the film “Sharmeelee,” which paved the door for a successful career spanning over 500 Hindi films, a few Punjabi films and a television series called “Aisa Des Hai Mera.” His breakthrough came when legendary actor Sunil Dutt saw his skill and recommended him for work after being pleased by his performances in “Sawan Bhadon” and “Reshma Aur Shera.”
The Struggles of a Misunderstood Artist
Despite his success on the big screen, Ranjeet encountered difficulties in his personal life as a result of the obvious difference between his on-screen and real-world personalities. In one of his interviews, he openly discussed the problems his daughter had as a result of misunderstandings about his playing roles.
“I used to visit my daughter when she was studying in Delhi. We would walk together in a restaurant, and people would look at me and comment, ‘How disgusting! He is going out with young girls,'” Ranjeet said, “A family was sitting next to us, and the husband kept shouting at them not to look at me. It made me uncomfortable.”
Addressing Misconceptions with Grace
With grace and genuineness, Ranjeet addressed these situations and promptly cleared up any misunderstandings. During the interview he stated, “When the waiter came to collect the meal order, I loudly shouted, ‘Arey beti lekar aayi hai, ussey poocho’ (I’ve brought my daughter, ask her). Following this, the same individual asked for a picture with me for his wife. I often struggle with such situations where I have to clarify that I don’t go out with ‘call girls’.”
Breaking Stereotypes and Embracing Change
Recalling his early days in the business, Ranjeet revealed that his family first reacted negatively to his portrayal of grey characters. “When I did my first grey character in Sharmeelee, I was thrown out of my house. I come from a very orthodox family. They (parents) thought I got into some stupid profession where I hurt girls and abused them (chuckles). While I played this crude man on screen, after the shot, we all used to make fun of it.”
Ranjeet whose real name was Gopal Bedi was in Coimbatore for Air Force training prior to his entry into Bollywood. He abandoned the training, though in order to follow his ambition of becoming a Bollywood star and it appears that his perseverance paid off because he is still regarded as one of the most beloved and well-liked villains in Indian cinema.
