The film business is not for the faint hearted. Sometimes even the best-made films don’t work out, but mediocre films might unexpectedly become hits. Success is not guaranteed, which is why people hold actors and directors in such high respect who have a track record of constant success. Although no actor in Bollywood can claim to have a 100% success rate, one filmmaker has accomplished this seemingly by magic.
Rajkumar Hirani: Bollywood’s Flawless Filmmaker
Over the course of a 20-year career, Rajkumar Hirani has accomplished what major players like Yash Chopra and Manmohan Desai were unable to: a perfect record of box office hits. His directing endeavours have all proven to be successful. His box office hits include Munnabhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, 3 Idiots, PK, Sanju, and Dunki. Surprisingly, two of these six films were the highest-grossing Indian films at the time of their releases, and four of them have made over Rs 400 crore in total revenue worldwide. With a total of Rs 2409 crore earned worldwide, Hirani is now one of Bollywood’s highest-earning directors.
A Stellar Start with Munnabhai MBBS
Munnabhai MBBS, Rajkumar Hirani’s debut film, was a sleeper hit. The movie made nearly Rs 50 crore even though it was shot on a meagre budget of Rs 10 crore and starred Sanjay Dutt, who wasn’t at his best at the time. Hirani’s early popularity allowed him the artistic flexibility to work with well-known artists and try his hand at many genres.
Blockbuster Collaborations with Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan
Aamir Khan and Hirani worked together to produce two of the greatest films ever, 3 Idiots and PK. Both films received high praise from critics and set records at the box office. Sanju, a biographical movie about Sanjay Dutt, starred Ranbir Kapoor and was another huge smash for Hirani. His most recent film, Dunki, which he collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan at a pivotal point in the latter’s career, was another big smash that enhanced Hirani’s standing.
Legends with Flops
Unbelievably, even the greatest names in Bollywood have had their fair share of failures. With Cirkus, Rohit Shetty suffered a significant setback, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna received a lacklustre reception from the home audience for Karan Johar. Even with his critical praise, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had underachievers in Black and Guzaarish. During his long career, YYash Chopra’s illustrious career saw flops such as Silsila, Faasle, and Vijay, while Manmohan Desai had Desh Premee and Toofan among his failures.
The Secret to Hirani’s Unblemished Record
Rajkumar Hirani’s ability to consistently deliver box office hits without a single flop is a rare phenomenon in Bollywood. His unique storytelling style, combined with his knack for choosing the right actors and scripts, has kept his track record flawless. As Hirani continues his filmmaking journey, the industry and fans alike hope he maintains this remarkable streak.
