Kriti Sanon: Overcoming Nepotism to Shine in Bollywood

Kriti Sanon

Kriti Sanon was born in New Delhi on July 27, 1990, and her career in Bollywood has been nothing short of remarkable. Kriti was raised by her parents, Rahul Sanon, a chartered accountant, and Geeta Sanon, a physics professor, in a Punjabi Hindu home, where hard work and education were valued. Nupur Sanon, Kriti’s younger sister, is likewise making a name for herself in the entertainment business. Kriti went to Delhi Public School in R.K. Puram. She then graduated from Jaypee Institute of Information Technology in Noida with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. She tried her hand at modelling for a short while before turning to acting.

Breaking into Films

In the Telugu film “1: Nenokkadine” released in 2014, Kriti Sanon made her acting debut opposite Mahesh Babu, the superstar. Reviews of her performance were good, even if she seemed a little nervous during the action scenes. She costarred with Tiger Shroff in the Hindi film “Heropanti” that same year, which earned her critical acclaim and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

The Struggle with Nepotism

In an open conversation with Pinkvilla, Kriti shared her struggles with losing roles to star kids and the frustration that ensued. “There was a phase where I was just very restless because I knew that I had way more potential than what I could portray in the opportunities that I had in front of me. I wanted something deeper. I wanted something where I could just show my potential as an actor way more,” she said.

Kriti further explained, “I was getting frustrated because I knew I could do it; I knew I could kill it, but I didn’t have it in front of me. At that point, I was also seeing some new faces, some of them belonging to the film background, coming in having not done anything and getting opportunities that I was like, how….”

Early Challenges in Modeling

Kriti shared a particularly painful event from her early modelling days in a conversation with Curly Tales. “I have never worked with the choreographer from my first ramp performance again; she was quite harsh to me since I made a mistake with the choreography. It was my first time, and it was at some farmhouse where my heels kept getting trapped in the grass. She was scolding me in front of fifty models and doing it so harshly that I started weeping. I cried as soon as someone yelled at me, even though I held it in for a long time.” Despite this, she did movie ‘Diwale’ alongside, Shahrukh Khan, Varun Dhawan and Kajol.

A Turning Point: The Role in Mimi

Kriti’s role in “Mimi” (2021) was a pivotal moment in her professional life. Kriti was much praised for her nuanced depiction of an ambitious actress who became a surrogate mother. Her performance stood out despite the film’s mixed reviews, and she was recognised with many awards, including the National Film Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
