Case Against Actor Nayanthara
A lawsuit has been filed against actress Nayanthara, the film’s director, producers, and head of content for Netflix India, Monika Shergill, in the wake of the controversy surrounding the Tamil film “Annapoorani.” The accused have allegedly disrespected Lord Rama, outraged Hindu religious emotions, and promoted “Love Jihad” through the film, according to the First Information Report (FIR) that a right-wing group in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, filed.
A group called Hindu Sewa Parishad has filed a FIR at the Omti police station, accusing seven people, including Nayanthara, director Nilesh Krishnaa, producers Jatin Sethi and R Ravindran, and Monika Shergill, head of content for Netflix India.
The film debuted on December 1 in theatres and on December 29 started to stream on the OTT platform.
Film removed from Netflix
A representative for the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Shriraj Nair, had also sent a warning to Netflix to remove the movie.
He posted a scene from the movie on X, along with the following warning: “We are strictly warning you @NetflixIndia to immediately withdraw this evil movie of yours or else be ready to face legal consequences and @BajrangDalOrg style action. @ZeeStudios_ (sic).”
Netflix took Nayanthara’s “Annapoorani” off the OTT platform after the legal dispute. One of the movie’s producers, Zee Studios, has informed Vishwa Hindu Parishad in writing that the movie will be taken down from the platform until it is altered.
