Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency has received conditional approval from the CBFC with a 'UA' classification, subject to major changes and verification of contentious quotes ascribed to historical figures.

Kangana Ranaut Emergency: The much-talked-about film ‘Emergency’ by Kangana Ranaut has faced continuous delays and other controversies for its release in view of certification issues from the CBFC. Since the film tried to outline some very key historical characters and moments in it, it received a provisional ‘UA’ certificate from the CBFC itself. It was mandated to carry out some edits and fact-checking for its film’s release.

Conditional Clearance with Specific Edits

The CBFC examining committee wanted a list of edits for the film. These included three major cuts and proof for various controversial historic quotes used in the film. Included in these quotes are those by U.S. President Richard Nixon on Indian women and Winston Churchill’s comments on Indians “breeding like rabbits.”

Besides these quotes, the committee asked the filmmakers to edit a few scenes also: scenes of violence, including one where a Pakistani soldier is shown beating up a Bangladeshi refugee infant and another in which beheadings are shown, had to be deleted or changed. It also ordered editing an expletive-laden scene and the changing of a family surname mentioned in the film.

Application for Certification and Initial Response

The film’s producers, Manikarnika Films Pvt Ltd, had first applied for certification on July 8 and on August 8 the CBFC communicated the changes required in the film to the makers. The filmmakers responded on August 14 to most of the changes sought and submitted the requisite papers. But the trailer of the film featuring controversial figures, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, had led to fresh objections by Sikh bodies, further muddling the prospects for its release.

While the certification was given by the CBFC by August 29, no official certificate was issued. The filmmakers moved the Bombay High Court over the delay. Subsequently, the court directed the CBFC to give a final decision before September 18.

September 6 Announcement of Release Delay

On September 6, Kangana Ranaut announced through X that the movie was going to be delayed owing to the still pending certification. Ranaut sounded disappointing, assuring the fans that an update for another date would come along soon. Starring Ranaut as Indira Gandhi, with an ensembled powerhouse cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Choudhary, the film remains in limbo, waiting for the final green signal from the CBFC.
