Filmmaker Guneet Monga is back in India after winning an Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Guneet and director Karthick Gonsalves created history at the Oscars 2023 as their project ‘The Elephant Whispers’ won the Best Documentary Short Film award.
Meanwhile, a surprise awaited her as soon as Guneet reached Amritsar to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna and his mother arrived at the airport to receive the acclaimed filmmaker.

In his Instagram post, Vikas said that just two months before the awards, his mother had promised to take Guneet to the Golden Temple, Amritsar if she won an Oscar.
Vikas Khanna shared a video of his mother carrying Guneet and the trophy to the holy place. Along with the clip he wrote, “From dreaming to becoming one of the most powerful producers in the world. Presenting to you Guneet, you made every Indian proud. My mother said 2 months ago that if Guneet wins an Oscar, So I’ll take her to the Golden Temple. #thank you #thank you.”
“The Elephant Whispers”, which is set in Mudumulai National Park in Tamil Nadu, explores the relationship between the elephants Raghu and Amu and their tribal caretakers Boman and Bailey.
This is Guneet’s second Oscar. Her first Oscar was in 2019 for the documentary short film, Iranian American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabach’s ‘Period: End of Sentence’, which follows a group of local women in Kathikera village of Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, as they work on a machine learns to drive. She manufactures low-cost, biodegradable sanitary pads, which she sells to other women at a cheaper price.
