Pan Nalin’s Chhello Show was named as India’s official submission for the Oscars earlier this year, and it has now made it to the Academy Awards’ Best International Feature shortlist. While many have applauded the choice, the filmmaker claimed in a recent interview that he was threatened following the film’s selection for the coveted honours. The director revealed that his crew was threatened with penalties if they did not withdraw from the Oscars.
In an interview with MidDay, he stated, “The worst was the cyberattack before the premiere of our movie. ‘Oscars mein se film nikaal, nahi toh achcha nahin hoga,’ my crew was warned. Instead of celebrating and campaigning in the United States, we spent three to four weeks combating this [vitriol],” he told Mid-day.
Audience was disappointed to see Chhello Show as selection
A segment of the audience was disappointed that SS Rajamouli’s epic RRR was not selected as India’s official entry. However, the filmmaker stated that after they saw the picture in theatres, their opinions shifted. “When the Indian public, film reviewers, and industry insiders finally saw the film, they couldn’t help but fall in love with it.”
Chhello Show or The Last Film Show will compete in the category with Alejandro González Iárritu’s Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, Holy Spider (Denmark), All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), Saint Omer (France), Corsage (Austria), EO (Poland), Return to Seoul (Cambodia), Decision to Leave (South Korea), Close (Belgium), and Argentina (Argentina).
