Famous lyricist Javed Akhtar has been ordered to appear in a Mumbai court due to the alleged allegation of ‘extortion and criminal intimidation’ leveled by Kangana Ranaut. According to a PTI report, the Mumbai court has asked him to appear on August 5, with all the charges leveled against him as criminal intimidation or outraging the modesty of a woman, sufficient to take further action against Javed Akhtar.
In 2020, Javed Akhtar registered a complaint against actress Kangana Ranaut. But during an interview, Kangana revealed that in the midst of her fight with actor Hrithik Roshan over the alleged affair, Javed Akhtar called her home and threatened her. After which she also filed a complaint against the lyricist.
Court issued summon against Javed Akhtar
Metropolitan Magistrate RM Shaikh on Monday (July 24) issued summon against lyricist Javed Akhtar and ordered him to appear before the court on August 5. Apart from this, the court said that a case of extortion is not made out against Javed Akhtar and asking a person to apologise in writing does not come under ‘valuable security’ under Section 30 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The court said, “As far as other offences levelled against the accused are concerned, on the basis of averments in the complaint, verification of the complainant and statement of her (Kangana’s) sister Rangoli Chandel.”
It added, “I have come to the conclusion that there are sufficient grounds to proceed against the accused for offence under IPC section 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman).”
Javed Akhtar, Kangana Ranaut’s legal fight
In 2020, Javed Akhtar’s complaint accused actress Kangana Ranaut of dragging his name in an interview after Sushant Singh Rajput’s alleged suicide. Kangana also filed a complaint against him in which she accused the lyricist of alleged ‘extortion and criminal intimidation’.
