CREED 3: If you are a boxing and anime fan just like me then Creed 3 is a go-to movie for you. Creed 3 is the third movie in the Rocky franchise. Following up on the story of Apollo Creed’s heavyweight champion son Adonis Creed from Creed (2015) and Creed II (2018), Creed III represents the ninth film in the renowned Rocky franchise, although the first without Sylvester Stallone as boxer Rocky Balboa. A highly emotional and intimate chapter in Donnie’s journey, the most recent Creed movie follows Adonis (Jordan) as he squares off against an old boyhood friend and former boxing prodigy (Jonathan Majors) in the ring.
While Creed 3’s departure from Rocky’s iconic heritage was a significant risk for the franchise, the positive reception the movie has received from critics shows that the gamble paid off. On Rotten Tomatoes, Creed 3 has received an amazing 90% positive reviews overall based on the early reviews. This rating is comparable to the Rotten Tomatoes score of the 1976 original Rocky movie (91%), which is the second-highest rating in the Creed franchise after the 2015 original (95%) film. The success of Creed III has been credited to a variety of factors, from the characters to the anime-style boxing action, dispelling any concerns about how the franchise would do without Stallone’s participation.
We can give you 6 reasons to watch Creed 3:
Michael B. Jordan’s Direction
Creed 3’s reviews are mostly complimenting Michael B. Jordan’s strong effort behind the camera, as the 2023 Rocky spinoff marks his directing debut. While Jordan is also receiving praise for his on-screen performance as Adonis Creed, his directing style and the film’s electrifying graphics are winning over critics for Creed 3. The screenplay, which seems to be one of the aspects of the picture holding back its bold success, is mentioned in the critical plaudits for Creed 3 as helping the film to punch above it. The accolades for Jordan’s debut direction are even more astounding when you consider that Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker of the critically acclaimed Black Panther, directed the first Creed movie. However, now that Jordan has demonstrated his ability to revitalize the Creed series independently and emerge from Rocky’s shadow, the future of Adonis’ story is considerably more promising under his direction. Creed 3 wouldn’t get the excellent accolades it deserved if Jordan’s directing hadn’t been top-notch and innovative, as it is his vision that informs the rest of the acclaim for the movie. Creed 3 demonstrates that the Rocky franchise is in good hands, especially if Jordan continues to helm further Creed or Rocky spinoffs.
Creed 3’s original fight scenes
Reviewers are also complimenting Creed 3’s innovative and explosive action scenes, which inherently act as another celebration of Michael B. Jordan’s outstanding direction. The franchise has always been recognized for its triumphant, gritty, and exhilarating boxing scenes, but after nine Rocky movies, it wouldn’t be unusual for the franchise to run out of ideas to refresh these signature fight sequences. Yet, critics are observing that the choreography and visual aesthetic of the combat scenes in Creed 3 are innovative and captivating, especially with the additional meaning they take on within Adonis Creed’s story.
According to Austin Burke’s review from Flick Fan Nation, Jordan directs one of the “most expertly-crafted fight sequences ever,” with other critics commending the boxing scenes as some of the greatest of the Creed trilogy. While it’s said that Creed 3 doesn’t feature as many boxing scenes as earlier movies in the Rocky series, the success of the choreography and directing of Jordan’s fight sequences makes up for their scarcity. The beloved Rocky franchise has particularly succeeded when prioritizing its principles and story over excessive fight scenes, with Jordan’s Creed 3 taking these teachings to heart by making the few fisticuffs count.
Jonathan Majors’ Sympathetic Villain Performance
If you loved his performance in ant-man and wasp: Quantumaina as kang the conqueror then you will love his performance as Damian “Dame” Anderson his former childhood friend, who spent time in prison while Creed lived the life he felt he deserved as a famous boxer.
While Jonathan Majors’ acting in Creed III garnered accolades from critics, Michael B. Jordan received plaudits for his direction. Majors portrays Damian “Dame” Anderson, a brand-new figure from Adonis’ past who joins the cast of Creed III as Donnie’s competitor and the film’s startlingly sympathetic opponent. The emotional arcs of the villains have been marginalized in the Creed franchise due to Donnie’s emphasis on being the hero. Still, Jonathan Majors’ adversary in Creed 3 has significant emotional stakes in the conflict. Of course, Majors’ outstanding performance—which, in the opinion of the critics, steals the show—is necessary for this to be successfully executed.

Creed 3’s fresh and dramatic story
The Creed movie series has primarily focused on the idea of legacy and generational conflict in the world of professional boxing, whether that be Donnie dealing with the past of his father Apollo Creed, the principles of Rocky Balboa, or restoring his family’s honor by defeating Ivan Drago, the son of his father’s murderer. Yet in Creed 3, Adonis is the only character, and he engages in a brutal battle with the past while dealing with his own survivors’ guilt and issues from his early years, long before Rocky Balboa was at his side. The operatic plot of Creed 3 is praised by critics for taking the Creed and Rocky franchises in a new direction without relying on the Italian Stallion.
Creed 3 proves that the Boxing franchise doesn’t need Rocky
When we hear Boxing the first thought that comes to our mind is Rocky Balboa, as a fan this was really shocking to hear that the boxing franchise doesn’t need Rocky anymore, well Rocky finally passed on the torch to Creed.
Rocky Balboa may have given Adonis Creed his early professional success, but Creed II’s conclusion demonstrated that Donnie had finally arrived at the right moment to shine and establish his legacy. When Michael B. Jordan managed to finally emerge from Rocky’s shadow and make the Creed series exclusively about the lead character, critics were ecstatic. The decision to go on the Rocky series without Sylvester Stallone is a huge risk, but Jordan pulls it off, demonstrating that the larger boxing epic is capable of tackling more stories unconnected to the Italian Stallion. Although officially designating Adonis as the true protagonist of his tale, Creed III fulfills all the requirements for the franchise that Stallone established with the first Rocky.
Creed 3’s Anime inspiration
The positive reviews for Creed III also praised Michael B. Jordan’s inventive approach to the battle scenes in the series and his anime influences. Naturally, the Rocky franchise will always respect earlier Rocky boxing matches, but Jordan audaciously takes the franchise in a new direction by doing so. As Jordan advances the Rocky tradition, his risks pay off by experimenting with new genres and reviving Creed III’s visually appealing combat scenes with shonen anime inspirations. In a recent interview, Michael B. Jordan claimed to use some of the iconic moves from the following Anime and wants you guys to see the glory of it:
- Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting
- My Hero Academia
- Naruto
- Dragon-ball Z
- MegaloBox
