The news of the Taliban taking over Kabul reached Ibrahim Nash’at while he was working on the finishing touches of his new documentary, Under the Sky of Damascus, with renowned Syrian filmmaker Talal Derki. Nash’at, an Egyptian documentary filmmaker residing in Berlin, describes the catastrophic events that took place in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, after American forces left the war-torn nation. He says, “We stopped working and started watching the news on television.”
Ibrahim Nash’at recalled the point of departure
Nash’at recalled the point of departure of his debut documentary, Hollywoodgate and he said, “We saw people falling from planes at the Kabul airport while desperately trying to get out of the country. I told Talal, we need to go to Kabul. I was confident I could find a way of getting into Afghanistan to meet the Taliban.”
About Hollywoodgate
Hollywoodgate, which is co-written by Nash’at, Derki, and American producer Shane Boris, who won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar for Navalny last year, made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September of last year. It depicts the story of how the Taliban used the military infrastructure left behind by American forces to tighten their hold on power.
The film was produced by Derki, Boris, and American actor-producer Odessa Rae. It follows the Taliban as they go from being a militia to a military state, aided by the massive military equipment that the US forces left behind.
