The growth of OTT services has transformed how we consume entertainment, but it is not without concerns. Recent judicial challenges to several television programs and motion pictures have sparked discussions about censorship, artistic freedom, and cultural sensitivity. Many OTT releases, ranging from political thrillers to historical plays, have become controversial, resulting in postponements, modifications, and bans. Maharaj
The storyline of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut film, “Maharaj,” has caused it to be restricted from streaming on Netflix. Even before it was released, Junaid Khan’s debut picture was involved in legal troubles. The Gujarat High Court prohibited the movie’s release, which was scheduled to happen on June 14 on the over-the-top network Netflix. The Gujarat High Court is now holding a hearing on this case. Its over-the-top distribution has now been prohibited for an additional day. Its hearing has been moved to Wednesday as of right now.
Aashram
Starring Bobby Deol in the lead role, the web series was directed by Prakash Jha and it featured several popular stars including Esha Gupta. The web series aired on MX Player and it got into legal trouble for hurting the sentiments of the Hindi community by portraying a Hindu guru in the wrong light.
Sacred Games 2
Anurag Kashyap faced legal issues related to his Netflix web series Sacred Games 2. Tajinder Bagga, a spokesman for the Delhi BJP, has reported the filmmaker to the police, claiming that he “intentionally hurt Sikh sentiments by adding a scene which disrespects Sikh religious symbol Kada.”
Tandav
Saif Ali Khan’s OTT release Tandav also faced legal trouble when it was released. An FIR was also filed against it that it contains elements that hurt Hindu sentiments and India’s leaders have been portrayed in a wrong way. When the case became too big, news came out that the makers have removed the scenes.
Paatal Lok
A copy of the legal warning was uploaded on social media by Lawyer Guild member Viren Singh Gurung, who also sent one to Anushka Sharma, the producer of the show. Viren Singh Gurung claimed in this notification that there is a scenario in the second episode of “Paatal Lok” where remarks disparaging caste have been used. According to Viren Singh, a female police officer used derogatory language against a Nepali character during an interrogation in the second episode. There wouldn’t have been an issue if the term that was used after this had merely been Nepali; it is unacceptable.
