Glamorous review: Kim Cattrall, known for her stellar performance in Sex and the City, took a rather unexpected detour by opting for Netflix’s latest drama series Glamorous over the SATC reboot. The series revolves around the exciting life of Marco, a makeup aficionado, who’s handpicked by the beauty tycoon Madolyn Addison, played by Cattrall. However, the series seems to fail in leveraging Cattrall’s formidable talent, leaving her in a desolate state of ennui.
A Mélange of References, Yet Missing the Mark
Although Glamorous is teeming with references to classics such as Glee, Gossip Girl, The Devil Wears Prada and A Star Is Born, it misses the mark when it comes to echoing the same frivolity and engagement. A heavy dose of clichéd wish-fulfillment fantasies gives an overworked impression, with a lack of originality marring the overall experience. Trimming down each episode could have potentially allowed for a more compact and engaging storytelling experience.

An Array of Characters with Little to Offer
The series introduces an array of characters in an attempt to diversify the narrative. From Madolyn’s prejudiced son, Chad, to the supportive first assistant Venetia, the show leaves no stone unturned in character exploration. However, the engagement potential is dampened by lengthy, often redundant scenes and flat dialogues. With a string of underutilised characters like the uncommunicative love-interest Ben and the brazen Britt, the series seems more like a wasted opportunity.
Kim Cattrall: A Wasted Potential?
The greatest disappointment comes in the form of Madolyn Addison’s character. Cattrall, an icon in the LGBTQ+ community, is reduced to a lifeless figure, far from the formidable, dynamic persona one might have expected. With no notable character development or engaging narrative arcs, Cattrall’s role seems to have been poorly conceived, undermining the series’ potential. The baffling decision to underutilise her talent raises questions about the series’ direction.
Glamorous appears to be an unfocused attempt at producing a fun-filled drama series. It falls short of expectations in character development, narrative cohesion, and effective utilisation of its talented cast. For a show that could have been a beacon for creativity and representation, it is disappointing to see it offer so little substance beneath the glitzy surface. A revamp is sorely needed to bring this series back to life.
