The new installment of the hit movie Knives Out will be set in the clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea, with filming beginning in Greece late last June. The new murder mystery has a new title: Glass Onion.
Director Rian Johnson tweeted over the summer that he was deeply inspired by the 1973 classic crime mystery The Last of Sheila, starring James Coburn, Raquel Welch, and Dyan Cannon and was written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins. “It’s pretty much the reason I’m in Greece right now,” Johnson wrote.
Just as Benoit Blanc is inspired by Hercule Poirot, Johnson is inspired by Poirot’s creator, Agatha Christie.
“It wasn’t just settings or murder methods, [Christie] was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunnit, she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues,” Johnson said. “When I made Knives Out, that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc — to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being.”
The film is set to debut on Netflix this holiday season.
Before it arrives on Netflix, Glass Onion will premiere internationally at the 47th annual Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022. The first installment also premiered in Toronto in 2019.
The only character reprising his role is Daniel Craig as Southern gentleman and detective extraordinaire Benoit Blanc, joined by new suspects including Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline with Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.
