Gumraah movie review: Not every remake of a south film can be a hit. Crime suspense thriller Gumraah, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur, is a case in point. Even double role by Kapur fails to excite viewers.
Gumraah is a remake of the 2019 Tamil film Thadam. During the investigation of a murder, the police come across two probable suspects, who look alike but do not know each other.
Gumraah has many interesting twists and turns but that fails to salvage the film. Aditya in double role is average at best.
‘Inspired by true cases’
Directed by Vardhan Ketkar, Gumraah informs viewers from the beginning that it is ‘inspired by true cases’. To prove its point, it cites examples from countries like Malaysia, US, the UK, and Germany where similar situation took place.
A young techie is murdered and Mrunal Thakur playing Shivani Mathur, is the investigator.
She is extremely focused but once her superior ACP Dhiren Yadav (Ronit Roy) intervenes, things take a drastic turn. He has a previous longstanding vendetta against Arjun Sehgal (Aditya) and is biased. He decides Arjun is guilty.
Meanwhile, the police find Arjun’s lookalike Sooraj Rana aka Ronnie and haul him for the same crime. Now Dhiren and Shivani have to figure out who is the real culprit.
So far so good. But now instead getting into murder mystery, within 20-odd minutes of the film, it goes into a flashback in the lives of Arjun and Sooraj, trying to explain how they got to the night of the murder. It also touches upon romance between Janhvi (Vedika) and Arjun. It then juggles a robbery by Sooraj and friend and sidekick Chaddi (Deepak Kalra).
Average performances
The revelation of how exactly Arjun and Sooraj are tied to one another could have been big. But alas, that was not to be!
The performances in the film are average. More was expected from Aditya . Ronit and Mrunal fail to impress
Though Gumraah has some great action sequences and a few laugh-out-loud moments, but overall, it gives the feel of a television show. The romance element in the first half feels like a whole another film.
Gumraah won’t bore you, but the mystery won’t keep you excited either.
