Harvey Weinstein is already spending a 23-year prison
In a trial that included claims from four women, they did not reach a judgement on numerous additional offences. Weinstein is already spending a 23-year prison sentence for sex offences in New York. Rumors about Weinstein’s immorality had been circulating in Hollywood for years, but his position at the pinnacle of the entertainment industry meant few were willing to oppose him. That all changed in 2017 when explosive claims against him were published, ushering in the #MeToo movement and allowing women to speak out against sexual harassment in the workplace.
Victims called him ‘predatory ogre’
The protracted West Coast trial heard graphic details of interactions between the once-powerful producer and women attempting to get into the film industry. Prosecutors depicted a predatory ogre who exploited his physical and professional abilities to rape and abuse women with impunity for years. According to prosecutors, his victims were intimidated and afraid for their careers if they spoke out against a guy who ruled Tinseltown for decades.
Weinstein, 70, was found guilty on three of the seven charges he faced on Monday: forceful rape, forcible oral copulation, and sexual penetration by a foreign object. All three counts were tied to a victim identified only as Jane Doe #1, and the offences occurred in February 2013.
The jury of eight men and four women acquitted him on one count of sexual battery by restraint involving another lady.
