The Government of India (GoI) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) have responded firmly to the controversy surrounding Netflix’s IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. Netflix was summoned by the government due to backlash against the series depiction of the 1999 IC 814 hijacking. BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar has also reacted to this development.
BJP Leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar Criticises Series Portrayal
Taking to news agency ANI, BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar strongly condemned the series, emphasising the historical inaccuracies in its depiction of the hijackers. He stated, “I vividly remember IC-814. I was very aware of that accident and very involved in following that. Every man and woman in India and indeed in South Asia knows that the hijack of IC-814 from Kathmandu was committed by Pakistan’s ISI-backed terrorists. Now, nobody thinks that there were some people from India who did the hijacking. So how the people have Hindu names in that movie, I don’t know. But I’m very happy that the I&B Ministry and the GoI have taken cognizance of this and have summoned Netflix.”
Kangana Ranaut Joins the Outcry
Earlier today, bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut also weighed in on the subject, criticising the series and the larger problem of censorship from her platform on X (previously Twitter). She stated, “Law of the land is that one can show unimaginable amount of violence and nudity on OTT platforms without any consequence or censorship, one can even distort real life events to suit their politically motivated sinister motives, there is all the freedom for communists or leftists across the world for such anti national expressions but as a nationalist no OTT platform allows us to make films that revolves around the integrity and unity of Bharat, it seems censorship is only for some of us who don’t want tukde of this nation and make films on historic facts. It’s hugely demotivating and unjust.”
Social Media Outrage and Public Reaction
Social media users are furious with how the IC 814 hijacking was portrayed. Numerous people have criticised the series for supposedly misrepresenting the terrorists and warping historical truths. Viewers are especially incensed over the hijackers’ Hindu names, claiming that this distorts the truth and diminishes the gravity of the actual incident. Strong internet debates concerning streaming companies’ obligations and historical accuracy have resulted from this backlash.
