Legendary actor Sir Sean Connery has passed away at the age of 90, official James Bond account on Twitter informed. The news of his death was also shared by his family without citing the cause of the death.
Connery is popularly known as for his iconic character, James Bond. The Scottish actor had an active career of five decades in Hollywood.
He rose to fame with James Bond in 1963 and went on to work in “From Russia With Love” (1963), “Goldfinger” (1964), “Thunderball” (1965), “You Only Live Twice” (1967), “Diamonds Are Forever” (1971) and “Never Say Never Again” (1983).
Born on August 25, 1930, Connery’s family wasn’t well off. His mother worked as cleaning lady and father plugged away in a factory. After leaving his studies at the age of 14, Connery took number of jobs including truck driver to milkman.
Even after his breakthrough in Hollywood, Connery’s physical presence was charismatic. His magnetism did not die even at the age of 59 when People magazine declared him the “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1989.
For his role of Jimmy Malone in Brian De Palma’s “The Untouchables”, Sean Connery won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. He also begged two Bafta awards and three Golden Globes in his career.
First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon paid her tribute on social media, saying that Scotland was in pain.
“I was heartbroken to learn this morning of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. Our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons. Sean was born into a working class Edinburgh family and through talent & sheer hard work, became an international film icon and one of the world’s most accomplished actors,” stated Sturgeon.
“James Bond” producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli credited Connery is responsible for the success of James Bond.
“He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words – ‘The name’s Bond, James Bond’. He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him.”
