Janhvi Kapoor, who is all set for the release of her movie Mr & Mrs Mahi, recently she opened up about her shelved film Dostana 2 in an interview. The actress was all set to star alongside Kartik Aaryan and Laksh Lalwani in the Karan Johar production.
However, in 2021, rumours surfaced online suggesting trouble in paradise between Kartik Aaryan and Karan Johar, leading to Kartik’s exit from the film. The Dharma Productions movie was later shelved altogether.
Janhvi Kapoor Speaks Up on Dostana 2
Janhvi Kapoor, for the first time, has addressed the rumours surrounding Dostana 2 being shelved. Speaking to Lallantop, she said, “I honestly don’t know what happened. We had already shot for 30-35 days and everything seemed to be going well from my perspective. I have no idea why the movie was shelved.”
She further added, “We began filming way before Covid hit us, and then there was a long delay of over a year and a half. After that, I guess things changed, and people involved felt it wouldn’t be right to restart the film.”
When questioned whether she didn’t want to admit that everything was not well between Kartik and Karan, Janhvi replied, “I don’t believe it was that. I believe work is really essential to both of them. But unke beech kya hua kya nahi hua, you should ask them about it.”
Kartik Aaryan’s Demand for Hike in Fees: The Real Reason Behind Dostana 2 Being Shelved?
Reports emerged in 2021 suggesting a disagreement between Kartik Aaryan and Karan Johar over the actor’s fees. According to an industry insider who spoke to Bollywood Hungama, “Kartik had signed Dostana 2 for a fee of Rs 2-3 crore in 2019. However, by the time filming began, his market value had grown significantly to over Rs 10 crore.”
The insider continued, “Kartik asked Karan Johar for a raise midway through the filming, but Karan felt it unprofessional. To compensate, Karan offered him a role in another film, Mr. Lele. However, Kartik was replaced by Vicky Kaushal in that movie as well. He was also unhappy when Dharma Productions offered the movie Yoddha to Shahid Kapoor instead of him. Although Shahid soon quit, they never approached Kartik for the role anyway.”
Negotiation Issues and The Fallout
The insider revealed further, “Karan then offered Kartik a cricket film directed by Sharan Sharma. To avoid getting dropped again, Kartik insisted on a signed contract before committing. He informed Dharma Productions that he would only resume shooting Dostana 2 after the contract for Sharan’s film was signed. This created trust issues between Karan and Kartik, who refused to commit to the movie until the screenplay was finalised.”
