Recalling the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight, the series has drawn criticism for purportedly minimising the roles of the terrorists involved and distorting actual events. The debate has been further intensified by Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, who has joined the conversation and shared her critical thoughts about the series on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Kangana Ranaut Slams IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack
Kangana Ranaut expressed her strong feelings about the series. Kangana attacked the absence of regulation on OTT platforms in a tweet, emphasising how violence and misrepresentation of actual events are permitted without repercussions. She said, “Law of the land is that one can show unimaginable amount of violence and nudity on OTT platforms without any consequence or censorship, one can even distort real life events to suit their politically motivated sinister motives, there is all the freedom for communists or leftists across the world for such anti national expressions but as a nationalist no OTT platform allows us to make films that revolves around the integrity and unity of Bharat, it seems censorship is only for some of us who don’t want tukde of this nation and make films on historic facts. It’s hugely demotivating and unjust.”
Earlier, In a video message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kangana addressed rumors about her upcoming film Emergency, stating, “There are rumors that our film Emergency has got a censor certificate. It is not true. In fact, our film was cleared earlier, but its certification has been stopped because of several threats.”
Netizens Outraged at the Series and Director Anubhav Sinha
The way the terrorists involved in the IC 814 hijacking are portrayed in the series has also caused a great deal of outrage among internet users. Many believe the seriousness of the incident has been minimised by the director’s imaginative decisions, such as having the terrorists use code names instead of their true names. Reactions criticising Anubhav Sinha on social media are growing, accusing him of misrepresenting historical events and painted the Indian government in a poor light during the crisis. The discourse surrounding the series is still developing, with many calling for responsibility in the portrayal of such sensitive events.
