India Oscar Entry 2025: Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2024. The film was chosen by a selection committee led by renowned filmmaker Jahnu Barua, standing out from a list of 29 contenders, including major movies like Animal and Aattam.

The film was selected by a 13-member committee led by esteemed Assamese director Jahnu Barua. The committee praised ‘Laapataa Ladies’ for its unique storytelling and social commentary, making it a standout choice for the Best International Picture category at the Academy Awards.

‘Laapataa Ladies’ features a talented cast including Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta in lead roles. Their performances contribute significantly to the film’s engaging narrative and its exploration of important themes.

Journey to the Big Screen

Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan along with Jyoti Deshpande, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ was made under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions. The screenplay is based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami, with dialogues penned by Sneha Desai and Divyanidhi Sharma.

Laapataa Ladies Box Office Performance

The film had a modest start when it was released on March 1, opening with just Rs 75 lakh. However, thanks to positive word-of-mouth and good reviews, it gained traction, earning nearly Rs 4 crore during its opening weekend. In its first week, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ collected Rs 6.05 crore, and after 50 days in theaters, it has amassed a total of Rs 17.31 crore. This impressive performance speaks to the film’s growing popularity.

Laapataa Ladies Competing with Other Notable Films

Among the 29 films considered for the Oscars, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ stood out against strong contenders such as the Bollywood hit ‘Animal’, the Malayalam National Award winner ‘Aattam’, and the Cannes winner ‘All We Imagine As Light’. Other notable entries included the Tamil film ‘Maharaja’ and the Telugu titles ‘Kalki 2898 A’D and ‘HanuMan’.
