Lata Mangeshkar death anniversary: It’s been one year to the passing away of Lata Mangeshkar, the evergreen songstress of India. The prolific singer died on February 6, 2022 at the age of 92. In her career spanning over seven decades, she won numerous accolades. She was also a recipient of Bharat Ratna. Transcending borders and language barrier, Lata Mangeshkar remains a favourite across generations, having sung in more than 10 languages. A voice that has tested time, her songs will always be crooned in every nook and corner of the country.
Despite one year of her passing away, the nation has not come to terms with her death. From award ceremonies to events, the nightingale of India is dearly missed. Today, as we remember the singing icon, here’s five songs that will live with us forever.
‘Hawa Mein Udta Jaaye’ (Barsaat, 1949)
One of the most popular songs of all time, Hawa Mein Udta Jaaye was one of the early hits of Lata Maneshkar. The music for the song was composed by music composer Shankar Jaikishen.
‘Muhabbat Hamari Zamana’ (Dulari, 1949)
Composed by music director Naushad and lyrics penned by Shakeel Badayuni, this beautiful song is picturised on ethereal beauty Madhubala. Sung by Lata Mangeshkar, the song perfectly captures non chalant emotions of women in love.
‘Jo Vaada Kia Wo Nibhaana Padega’ (Taj Mahal, 1963)
This song is one of her most loved duets with Mohd. Rafi. The song bagged Lata Mangeshkar a nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.
Aye mere watan ke logon
The moving song written by Pradeep to salute the valour of Indian soldiers were sung by Lata Mangeshkar on Republic Day, 1963 in New Delhi in the presence of then President S. Radhakrishnan and then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Her rendition of the song brought the audience to tears.
‘Aaj fir jeene ki tamanna hai’ (Guide, 1965)
Another evergreen hit, this chart-topping song featured Waheeda Rahman. She was nominated for a Filmfare award for the song’s rendition in the 1965 movie ‘Guide’.
