Netflix has received a legal notice after a lawyer filed a lawsuit against the streaming giant over an episode of American sitcom The Big Bang theory. In one of the episodes of the show, a character uses derogatory term for Madhuri Dixit.
Legal notice against Netflix
Political analyst Mithun Vijay Kumar has filed a lawsuit against Netflix with the demand that streaming giant removes the episode of season 2 where Raj Koothrapalli, an Indian character portrayed by Kunal Nayyar in the show and Sheldon Cooper played by Jim Parsons, draw a comparison between Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai.
Sheldon Cooper calls Aishwarya Rai a poor man’s Madhuri Dixit in the scene in question. Replying to this, Raj Koothrapalli says “Aishwarya Rai is a goddess, by comparison, Madhuri Dixit is a leprous prostitute”.
‘Deeply disturbed by derogatory remarks’
In his lawsuit, Kumar said the character’s comments are offensive and derogatory. He said that as a fan of Madhuri Dixit since childhood, he was deeply disturbed by such remarks.
“My client is deeply concerned about the negative impact that such content can have on society, particularly in perpetuating harmful stereotypes and discrimination against women. This content is not only insensitive but also promotes sexism and misogyny, which is unacceptable in any form,” the notice said.

“It is important to hold companies like Netflix accountable for their actions and to ensure that they are sensitive to the cultural values and sentiments of the communities they serve. I was deeply troubled by the use of a derogatory term in one of the shows on Netflix – Big Bang Theory. This term was used in reference to the acclaimed actress Madhuri Dixit, and it was not only offensive and deeply hurtful but also showed a lack of regard for her dignity,”Kumar said.
‘The Big Bang Theory’ debuted in 2007 and ended its 12-season run in 2019. The show starred Kaley Cuoco, Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Mayim Bialik, Kunal Nayyar and Melissa Rauch among others.
