Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui slams Priyanka Chopra for calling Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy ‘South Asian’, netizens are divided

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is always hyping up the South Asian diaspora. The actor is currently busy promoting her upcoming series Citadel with co-star Richard Madden. She was recently in India where she kickstarted the promotional campaign of the action-thriller spy series with the GOT alumni. Priyanka was also accompanied by her husband and singer Nick Jonas along with their daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Amid busy shoots and schedules, Priyanka took to her Instagram stories to praise Pakistani filmmaker, whom she referred to as ‘South Asian’, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy for becoming the first woman of colour to direct a star wars film. However, her remarks have not landed with Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui, who featured in the Bollywood film MOM alongside Sridevi. Find out why.

Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui bashes Priyanka Chopra

Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui took to Twitter to write a post slamming Priyanka Chopra for calling Sharmeern Obaid Chinoy ‘South Asian’ and not Pakistani. He wrote, “With due respect, @priyankachopra Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is a Pakistani first just to brush up your knowledge. Much like the way you flaunt your Indian nationality whenever you get the opportunity before claiming to be a South Asian. (sic)”

What Priyanka said

Priyanka Chopra took to her Instagram stories to laud Chinoy and also wrote, “First person of colour and first woman to direct a ‘Star Wars’ film…and she’s South Asian!! What a historic moment @sharmeenobaidchinoy. So so proud of you my friend! May the force be with you!(sic)”

Netizens divided

Adnan’d remark on Priyanka’s post has divided the internet into two sections. While one section is of the view that Pecee has been vocal about South Asian talent, another said that the Citadel actor should mention that she is a Pakistani national.

“Seriously, idk why these people find it hard to just say Pakistani?? If it was their own, they wouldn’t be saying South Asian,” one person wrote.

To defend PCJ’s statement, a netizen replied to this comment by saying, “Cause she’s not writing a biography about Sharmeen. She is congratulating her friend and celebrating their commonness which is being South Asian women. Why would Priyanka be proud of her being Pakistani? And please show me where Pakistanis have praised Indians like this.”

“When it comes to anything Indian, these people loudly say Indian, as soon it’s anything Pakistani it conveniently  becomes “SoUtH aSiAn”…..tbh we are also at fault, we never promoted or defended ourselves,” wrote another user.

“Sharmeens never goin to correct her either so please ap bhe chill krein !” mentioned a person, as they supported Priyanka.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Adnan Siddiqui has bashed an Indian or India. Previously, he had criticised Sidharth Malhotra starrer Mission Majnu for allegedly misinterpreting Pakistanis in the film.

He had written, “How much misrepresentation is too much misrepresentation? Bollywood has the answer. I mean come on, yaar with all the money you have, hire some good researchers to do homework on us. Or allow me to help. Make sure to take notes – no, we don’t wear skull caps, surma, tawiz; no, we don’t ask janab about their mijaz; no, we don’t go around throwing adaab.”
