Pathaan: Studios predicted on Sunday that Avatar: The Way of Water brought in an additional $15.7 million to take the top spot on the American box office charts for the seventh consecutive weekend. Overall, it was a quiet weekend, noted largely for the Hindi language blockbuster Pathaan, which broke into the top five, and the collector’s editions of films like Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Fabelmans following Oscar nominations.
Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan took fifth place
Avatar 2 took first place. Only the first Avatar had a longer North American run, and Titanic had a longer run in the previous 25 years (which stayed in first place for 15 weeks). James Cameron directed all three. Globally, The Way of Water has now surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time, with an estimated $2.1 billion (of which Cameron has directed three). “James Cameron just continues ticking off all the records and milestones,” said Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “And it still has a wide-open market.”
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish took second place
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, a family-friendly offering from Universal and DreamWorks, came in second with $10.6 million in its sixth weekend. The animated spinoff has generated more than $140.8 million in North America and was just made available for home viewing. Sony’s A Man Called Otto finished third with $6.8 million from 3,957 theatres. Universal’s meme-able horror M3GAN slipped into fourth place with $6.4 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $82.3 million.
