Pathaan controversy: Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, has run into even more controversy, with posters of the film being destroyed in an Ahmedabad mall and members of the VHP and Bajrang Dal declaring they will not allow its showing in Gujarat unless their issues with the film’s song “Besharam Rang” are rectified.
On Wednesday, many videos circulated on social media showing VHP and Bajrang Dal members yelling slogans, destroying the poster, and stomping on giant cutouts of Pathaan, which also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. During the debate, Pathaan got backing from director Rahul Dholakia and others who criticised the vandalism. The song, which shows Deepika in several outfits, including a saffron bikini, is at the core of the protests. The song, which was uploaded on December 12, has already received 50 million views on YouTube.
VHP and Bajrang Dal demand to remove Besharam Rang
“We want the makers of ‘Pathaan’ to delete the words and also remove the song ‘besharam rang’ from the movie. We also want the makers to also remove sequences where the actress is seen in a saffron outfit in the song, will not allow Pathaan to be screened in Gujarat unless these two amendments are made. Though we are also opposed to the film’s title since it promotes love jihad, our main demand at this time is that song,” Bajrang Dal’s north Gujarat president Jwalit Mehta said. Gujarat VHP spokesperson Hitendrasinh Rajput added that “Besharam Rang” should preferably be removed from the film.
“The VHP and Bajrang Dal are opposed to the song and scenes in it. We have no objections to the film if that is resolved. We will not allow the film to be released with that song in its original form,” Rajput stated, adding that the VHP is fine with the title.
Rahul Dholakia reacts to the protests
While most people in the industry have not touched on the matter, Dholakia, who directed SRK in Raees, condemned the protest as “vandalism and hooliganism”.
According to CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi, the committee has directed the filmmakers to make the recommended changes to the film, “including the songs,” and to submit the updated version before to theatrical release. The CBFC’s goal, according to Joshi, is to create a balance between the creators’ inventiveness and the audience’s sentiments and, as a result, find a solution.
