Prasoon Joshi: Celebrated writer and Censor Board chief Prasoon Joshi, has opened up about the recent crisis in Bollywood including spate of box office failures. He said instead of adopting a ‘victim mindset’, the industry must look for ways to overcome the crisis. He also spoke about why most Bollywood films are flopping.

South industry doing well
Joshi said 2022 has been not very productive for Bollywood and many big budget films with big star cast like such as Shamshera and Laal Singh Chaddha, have tanked at the box office. On the other side South film industry has done exceptionally well even in the Hindi belt. On top of that, boycott calls against may Bollywood films has only made matters worse, said Joshi.
Prasoon, who was talking at a literary event in Delhi, said the industry and film makers have lost connect with their roots. “There was a time when Bollywood films had stories taken from literature and mythology. These tales were connected to their roots. Then, at some point, Bollywood became self-congratulatory and went into a bubble. There are mainly only people from Mumbai here. Many have never seen a farmer in real life. But then they try to show farmers in films. They are cut off from their roots.” Bollywood is in a bubble and needs to come out of it, he said.

Prasoon dons many hats
Prasoon Joshi is a poet, writer, lyricist, screenwriter, and communication specialist. He rose to fame with Rajkumar Santoshi’s Lajja. His illustrious filmotography includes films like Fanaa, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par to Black, Delhi 6 to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. He has also received the National Film Award for Best Lyrics twice. He heads the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) after taking over from Pahlaj Nihalani in 2017.
