Raju Srivastava: India’s legendary comedian passed away at the age of 58 in Delhi on 21st September. Born in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, he had struggled on his way to become one of the best of India. Though, he started his career with a film, he roared through the success in a comedy show named ‘The Great Indian Laughter’.
Often credited with the name of ‘Gajodhar’, Raju Srivastava is often accredited of introducing stand-up comedy to the masses in India. His legacy as a comedian is surely hard to beat.

Early Career
Raju Srivastava began his career in Bollywood movies by doing minor roles. His first role was in Anil Kapoor’s Tezaab. His second venture was Rajshri Productions’ Maine Pyaar Kiya. He then went on to doing minor roles in many films such as ‘Baazigar’ and ‘Bombay to Goa’. He also worked as an actor and comedian in the movie ‘Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiya’.
He was also a part of some big ventures like ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Main Prem Ki Diwaani Hoon’.
Rise to success
Through his struggle in initial phase, Raju went onto become a leading comedian. He had a long role in the quite famous show ‘Shaktimaan’. However, in 2005, his stars turned when he appeared in the show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ and went on to become the second runner-up of the show. The show became popular and gave Raju Srivastava the much needed break. Eventually, he participated in the spin-off of the show titled, ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge – Champions’ in which he won the title of “The King of Comedy”.

His participation in these shows garnered him a nationwide fame and soon he was on everyone’s television making everyone laugh with his jokes. Subsequently, he was a part of other shows such as “Comedy Ka Maha Muqabla”, “Laugh India Laugh”, “Comedy Circus”, “Gangs of Haseepur”.
He was also a contestant in the Big Boss’ season third. In 2010, he had received threatening calls from Pakistan when he cracked a few jokes on ‘Dawood Ibrahim’.
Politics
In 2014, Raju Srivastava became politically active. He was also nominated to be a part of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. He made music videos for the same, and, also shot various commercials for it.
