In a tragic development, veteran filmmaker Rajkumar Kohli, celebrated for his iconic works such as Nagin and Jaani Dushman in the 1970s, breathed his last in Mumbai on Friday at the age of 93. The seasoned director suffered a fatal heart attack at 8 AM on Friday morning, leading to his untimely demise. Reports indicate that a funeral ceremony is scheduled for later in the evening.
About Rajkumar Kohli:
Born in 1930, Kohli embarked on his cinematic journey in the 1960s, making his debut with the 1963 release Sapni and subsequently directing the Punjabi film Dulla Bhatti in 1966. While he enjoyed moderate successes with films like Lootera (1970) and Kahani Hum Sab Ki (1973), it was the 1976 blockbuster Nagin that catapulted him to widespread acclaim. Following this triumph, he delivered yet another hit with the 1979 release of Jaani Dushman, a pioneering venture in Indian horror cinema.
Despite some subsequent successes like Naukar Biwi Ka (1983) and Inteqaam (1988), Kohli’s later career didn’t match the heights of his earlier achievements. Transitioning away from filmmaking in the 1990s, he directed only one film in the new millennium. His final directorial venture, Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (2002), aimed to recapture the essence of his 1970s hits but faced commercial disappointment, prompting Kohli’s exit from the industry.
Adding a personal touch to his professional legacy, Kohli was married to Nishi, a Punjabi film star he collaborated with on the 1963 Punjabi film Pind Di Kudi. The esteemed filmmaker leaves behind two sons, Gogi and Armaan, the latter of whom he directed in his farewell film. The industry mourns the loss of a visionary whose contributions shaped the landscape of Indian cinema.
