In a recent conversation, Sam Levinson, the co-creator of the HBO drama series ‘The Idol’, shed light on the unsettling character ‘Tedros’, portrayed by Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd. This revelation emerges amid the swirling controversies surrounding the show.
Discomfort and Criticism – The Weeknd’s Debut Acting Performance
The HBO series, which has been in the spotlight for its explicit content and troubling sexual scenes, has seen Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. The Weeknd, face considerable backlash for his performance. Making his acting debut with ‘The Idol’, Tesfaye’s portrayal of the deeply toxic Tedros has been met with criticism from viewers and film enthusiasts alike, who have found it challenging to connect with him or his performance.
Characterisation of Tedros – Unmasking the Douchebag
Levinson elaborated on the conception of Tesfaye’s character during an appearance on ‘Crafting The Family in Max’. The director described Tedros as a character with big dreams but lacking the talent to achieve them. This characterisation was intentional, to depict Tedros as someone who obsesses over his appearance, but when left alone, reveals his calculated and pathetic nature. Tesfaye’s portrayal of Tedros was designed to be neither hypnotising nor mysterious, but rather, a clear depiction of a ‘douchebag’.
The Weeknd Speaks on his Role and Uncomfortable Scenes
In a separate interview, The Weeknd offered his perspective on his character, Tedros, and the explicit scenes he shares with co-star Lily-Rose Depp in ‘The Idol’. Tesfaye used the term ‘gluttonous’ to describe these scenes, highlighting the awkwardness of his character. He also alluded to the ‘loser’ persona of Tedros as a glimpse into the humanity of a psychopath, revealing the vulnerability beneath the surface.
